Living in Aldershot

Aldershot is a town in Hampshire known as ‘the home of the British army’ for its rich military history. With its fantastic schools, transport links and leisure facilities, Aldershot is widely regarded as excellent place to live.

Farnham is a historic market town in Surrey and the largest town in the Borough of Waverley. It has many old buildings and Georgian houses, as well as a range of parks and play areas.

Ash is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Guildford. With a station on the Reading-Guildford-Gatwick line and direct roads to Aldershot, Farnham, and Guildford, it is certainly very well connected!

Ash Vale is a village in the Borough of Guildford, located just two miles from central Farnborough and Aldershot. It is considered a commuter settlement due to its half-hourly 40 minute train to London Waterloo.

Tongham is a village in the Northeast of Farnham, adjoining the A31 and A331. It is home to a fantastic selection of pubs and shopping facilities, not to mention the largest brewery in Surrey, The Hogs Back Brewery!

Sports-lovers will rejoice, as Aldershot is home to a wide variety of sports and leisure facilities, including but not limited to: Rushmoor gymnastics academy; Aldershot tennis centre; Aldershot bowling; Aldershot pools and lido; Alpine snow sports; and Alderwood leisure Centre. It is also home to arguably the most successful athletics club in British and European history: Aldershot, Farnham & District A.C., which has produced a number of Olympians.

Things to do

There’s so much to do in the Aldershot area, come rain or shine. In summer months, bring the kids down to the Aldershot Lido to enjoy the three water slides, basketball area, picnic area, and paddling pool for toddlers. Perfect for scorching hot days!

Whatever the weather, you can try out skiing, snowboarding and donutting at Alpine Snow Sports – Aldershot’s very own artificial slopes which provide endless fun for all ages!

For those interested in Aldershot’s rich military history, the town is home to a captivating Military Museum.

The area also benefits from a large amount of green space, lakes, and parks, including Alice Holt Forest in Farnham, which has a Go Ape Treetop Adventure; Manor Park in Aldershot, which is home to The Heroes’ Shrine and war memorial garden as well as tennis courts, a skate park, and a play area; Lake House Nature reserve and play area in Aldershot; and Willow Park in Ash.

Food and Drink

The Aldershot area has a number of fantastic pubs, restaurants, and cafes for every budget. Grab a bite to eat overlooking the lake at The Lake House Café or enjoy fresh food and quality coffee at The Gorge Café.

For an evening meal, there’s a whole range of different cuisines available in the area, from Indian to Nepalese to Caribbean to Italian. There’s a variety of great pubs too, including The Swan, The Greyhound, and The Admiral – not to mention the Hog’s Back Brewery in Tongham, which is the largest brewery in Surrey! The Hog’s Back Hotel is also a great spot for special occasions and celebrations.

Head out of town

Just 20 minutes out of Aldershot by car or train, Guildford is a wonderful town that boasts a wide variety of high street and independent shops, restaurants, bars, and cafes. There’s also a castle with gorgeous grounds that are perfect for a picnic!

Situated in close proximity to the M3, M4, A3, and M25, Aldershot benefits from great connections to London, the Southcoast, and the rest of the country. The town also has excellent transport links by bus and rail.

The local MP for Aldershot, Farnborough, Blackwater, and Hawley is Leo Docherty, a Conservative MP who has served the area since 2017. Ash is served by Conservative MP Michael Gove, who has represented Surrey Heath since 2005 and was Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities until July 2022

Fun Fact

On the 9th December 1961, before their career really took off, the Beatles played a gig at The Palais Ballroom in Aldershot, which was on the corner of Queens Road and Perowne Street. However, due to an unfortunate blunder with Aldershot News regarding the promotion of their event, only 18 people showed up, and The Fab Four were forced to play to a half-empty venue!
